6 Simple Steps to Hosting Happy Hour at Home

I'm always looking for an excuse to get together with friends, but between coordinating work schedules and finding babysitters (for those with kiddos) it can be somewhat discouraging to schedule at times.

That's why I love a good happy hour! It's the perfect time to squeeze in some socializing. Plus, it's cheap and less fussy than planning a dinner party.

Instead of going to your typical happy hour spot, consider hosting happy hour in the comfort of your own home. It's easy on the wallet and you don't have to worry about sifting through menus trying to decide who has the best drink specials or a food menu that pleases everyone.

Planning a happy hour at home can be really simple with these 6 steps:

1. CREATE A GUEST LIST.

2. SCHEDULE A DATE AND TIME.

Remember to check your guests availability before setting the date!

3. DECIDE ON A COLOR SCHEME.

Consider choosing colors that are in season.

TIP: Use the colors and decor in your home for inspiration.

I decided on shades of burgundy and blush for this fall cocktail hour.

4. CREATE A MENU

Keep the menu short and simple. Remember, it's happy hour, not dinner!

Charcuterie and cheese trays are perfect for cocktail hours. I created this version using an assortment of meats, cheeses, crackers, breads, grapes, candied pecans and dried fruit -- all from Trader Joe's.

I recommend offering at least one soft, one firm and one hard cheese. And remember to use separate cheese knives for each selection.

TIP: Don't have a cheese board or platter on hand? Consider using a cutting board instead!

I found this recipe for Guacamole Shrimp Wonton Cups here. They're yummy and super easy to prepare.

I love food selections that are visually appealing and appear harder to make than they actually are ;-)

I found some organic edible flowers from Whole Food's, which added a little flair to this flirty champagne cocktail. The champagne coupe glasses are from Crate & Barrel. Love them!

TIP: Ask guests to bring a bottle of wine or drink of their choice to save on costs.

5. CREATE A VIBE

Mix in candles throughout your designated space and play soft music in the background.

5. CHEERS!

Last, but not least, remember to relax and enjoy yourself!
